Created in 1998, this work dates from the early years of Philip Stanton’s establishment in Barcelona, the city where he has lived and worked since 1988. His painting is characterized by a visual language of great graphic clarity, closely related to his work as an illustrator and designer, based on the simplification of forms and the use of flat, luminous colors.

The female figure, silhouetted against the vast blue expanse of the sea, allows Stanton to construct a scene with a distinctly Mediterranean atmosphere through a highly refined composition. The intensity of the blues and reds and the geometrization of the space reinforce the image’s synthetic character, while the gouache lends a matte surface and a distinctive chromatic density.

Philip Stanton is an American visual artist, painter, illustrator, and designer based in Barcelona. Educated at Rollins College and the School of Visual Arts in New York, he has developed a career spanning painting, illustration, and large-scale urban projects, participating in over a hundred solo and group exhibitions. His artistic practice is complemented by teaching at institutions such as EINA and BAU in Barcelona.
