During the 1980s, Luis Feito established a new phase in his artistic career, marked by a progressive expansion of his color palette and a renewed freedom of gesture. Following the material-abstract intensity of previous decades, his painting incorporated more luminous and dynamic compositions, in which color took on an increasingly prominent role. Without abandoning abstraction, Feito then explored a more open and expressive style of painting, characterized by a balance between materiality, gesture, and space—a quality reflected in this work. Coinciding with his move and travels between Montreal, New York, and Madrid, his aesthetic underwent a radical refinement, adopting smoother surfaces and a compositional mysticism close to minimalism and Eastern Zen.
Luis Feito was one of the leading figures of Spanish abstraction and a founding member of the El Paso group. After training in Madrid, he settled in Paris in 1956, where he came into contact with the international avant-garde and developed an abstract language characterized by the power of color—especially red—and the simplification of forms. Throughout his career, he exhibited in major cities across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, received numerous awards, and his work is part of the collections of leading international museums, such as MoMA in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, and the Guggenheim.
