The Boalum lamp is one of the most unique and enduring proposals within the Italian design scene of the twentieth century. Conceived in 1970 by the designers Gianfranco Frattini and Livio Castiglioni for the renowned lighting firm Artemide, this piece has established itself as a benchmark of contemporary industrial design, both for its innovative character and for its functional and aesthetic adaptability.
Its structure is composed of a flexible plastic tube with a granulated material filling, which allows it to maintain its shape without compromising its malleability. This feature gives it a high degree of versatility, as it can be arranged in various configurations according to the spatial or creative needs of the user.
Gianfranco Frattini belongs to the generation of Italian designers of the fifties and sixties. He studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, and began his career as an industrial designer when he realized that he needed appropriate furniture and lighting for the interiors of his architectural projects. In 1956 he was one of the founders of ADI, Associazione per il Disegno Industriale. Throughout his long career, Frattini collaborated with Gio Ponti, worked for Cassina and Acerbis, and designed lamps for Artemide, as well as being a member of the Milan Triennale and designing for Knoll.
