The Coffrage piece, designed by Pierre Bouvier and Philippe Meyer, is a modular and versatile piece of furniture that embodies a distinctive approach to Swiss design.
The initial purpose of the Coffrage, designed in 1995, was to serve as a storage system for CDs, a common need in the mid-1990s. It is notable for its ability to keep discs protected from dust and out of sight.
A defining feature is its hinged design, which allows it to alternate between an open and closed state. This flexibility gives the user the option to display or hide their collection and allows for multiple compositions and arrangements.
The Coffrage was presented in several versions, allowing it to adapt to different spaces: a tabletop version with capacity for 100 CDs, and a version with wheels (the one we show), capable of storing up to 300 CDs.
It was produced by BD Barcelona Design, a company known for its artisanal approach and for publishing signature pieces rather than mass production.
Pierre Bouvier and Philippe Meyer founded together the architectural firm Meyer & Bouvier in Bern, Switzerland, in 1992. This partnership lasted eleven years and focused on both architecture and furniture design. The collaboration between the two was recognized with numerous awards. In 1995, they won a design competition for the new Meyer & Bouvier studio in Geneva, demonstrating their success in the architectural field. After their time together, Philippe Meyer continued his career as an architect. He founded his own agency in Geneva in 1995. He has been recognized with distinctions from the SIA (Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects) and Best Architects, and has participated in events such as the Venice Biennale.
