HANS-AGNE JAKOBSSON (Sweden, 1919-2009)
Scandinavian wall lamp V180, c. 1960.
Metal.
Measurements: 45 x 30 x 21 cm.
Scandinavian wall lamp V180 by the well-known Swedish designer Hans Agne Jakobsson. In this particular case the piece stands out for the use of reflective material whose finish amplifies and intensifies the effect of the light bulb.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a Swedish interior and furniture designer, born in Gotland, Sweden. He is known for his anti-glare luminaires, inspired by the idea of "Organic Modern" by Poul Henningsen and Alvar Aalto. He began designing at the age of 18 and later graduated as an architect in Gothenburg. He began his career as an assistant to Carl Malmsten and Werner West, the latter known as a master of interior design.
After gaining experience as a designer at various companies, including General Motors, he founded his own lighting company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, where he began manufacturing luminaires and furniture of his own design.
To understand the philosophy behind his works, it is interesting to turn to his own words: "Here in Scandinavia we have always regarded the art of Japanese interior decoration as an excellent model of simplicity and functionality. The way of life of our people, combined with our inherited traditions, has such a heterogeneous character that we can rarely implement the ideas of other countries in our own. However, I believe that the pine veneer lamps that have been depicted here have something of the warmth and soft intimacy that we Scandinavians are apt to associate with the atmosphere in Japanese room creation."
