The large scale and boldness of its forms place this floor lamp within the design language developed by Philippe Barbier during the 1970s. The composition is structured by a vertical succession of geometric volumes, among which the large black-lacquered central sphere stands out, creating striking hallmarks with the reflective surfaces of the nickel-plated metal. The alternation between dark and metallic finishes, combined with the slenderness of the shaft and the wide cylindrical shade, gives the piece a pronounced sculptural and decorative presence. Barbier frequently employed these contrasts in materials and finishes, exploring the reflective qualities of metal as an essential part of the spatial presence of his light fixtures.

A French designer, manufacturer, and master craftsman, Philippe Barbier was active in Paris primarily during the 1960s and 1970s. From its establishment, Maison Barbier, located on rue du Pré aux Clercs, produced furniture and, in particular, a wide range of light fixtures characterized by the use of polished metals, stone, and striking geometric forms. The firm also played a role in bringing Henry Massonnet’s famous “Tam-Tam” stool to the market, and Barbier’s lamps achieved notable visibility in French interiors and film productions of the period.
