The “Strax” model embodies the most functional aspect of Hartmut Lohmeyer’s design, combining a construction suitable for everyday use with a look of great formal clarity. The structure alternates the warmth of beech with the dark surfaces of the seat and backrest, crafted from molded plastic and gently curved to conform to the body. The contrast between the two materials is accentuated by the black elements that connect the joints to the wooden uprights.

One of the design’s most successful features is its stackable design, which allows multiple units to be stacked compactly. This solution reflects the emphasis that German furniture of the period placed on versatility and efficient use of space, and it is particularly consistent with Casala’s focus on furniture for communal spaces.

Hartmut Lohmeyer trained at the Technische Hochschule in Karlsruhe, where he studied under Egon Eiermann, and subsequently taught for two years at the University of Alexandria. As an independent designer, he was extensively active in the field of furniture design, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s, with his collaboration with Wilkhahn being particularly noteworthy. His architectural training is reflected in designs characterized by structural clarity, economy of materials, and a close relationship between function and construction.
