A mid-20th-century Italian-designed round table, attributed to Ignazio Gardella, conceived through a combination of materials and construction techniques that reflect the sophistication of Italian design of the era. The rosewood tabletop features a meticulous geometric composition in which the rich grain of the wood takes center stage. The structure is supported by a central enameled iron base, topped by four adjustable brass legs. The use of stitched leather also introduces an interesting artisanal detail and highlights the attention paid to materials and finishes.
The attribution to Ignazio Gardella, one of the key architects and designers of Italian modernism, is particularly significant. Initially trained as an engineer at the Polytechnic University of Milan and later as an architect, Gardella developed a body of work characterized by refined forms, rigorous proportions, and a special focus on the relationship between architecture, furniture, and space. In 1947, together with Luigi Caccia Dominioni and Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua, he founded the firm Azucena, a pioneer in the production of modern furniture designed by architects. Within this context, his designs played a decisive role in defining a conception of the domestic interior in which objects took on an architectural and sculptural dimension without sacrificing their functionality.
