The Lingotto lamp, designed by Renzo Piano for iGuzzini, is the result of a close collaboration between the Italian architect and the lighting firm. Its name refers to the historic Lingotto complex in Turin, the former FIAT automobile factory that Piano transformed beginning in the mid-1980s into a large multifunctional complex.In 1985, the Renzo Piano Building Workshop was commissioned to repurpose the former factory, preserving much of its extraordinary industrial architecture and giving it new functions. The project became one of the most significant examples of the transformation of 20th-century industrial architecture.
Renzo Piano grew up in a family of builders. He graduated with a degree in architecture from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1964 and completed his training working with Franco Albini, and later with Louis Kahn in Philadelphia and Z. S. Makowsky in London. In 1971, he began his collaboration with Richard Rogers, with whom he designed the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, a project that brought him international recognition. In 1980, he founded the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, from which he developed an extensive international career that includes the Lingotto in Turin, the Menil Collection in Houston, Kansai International Airport in Japan, and the Beyeler Foundation in Basel. Among his major honors are the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture (1989), the Praemium Imperiale Prize for Architecture (1995), and, most notably, the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1998, considered one of the highest international honors in the profession.
