Sculptural and unique “Tree” lamp, designed by Bořek Šípek for Vitra in 1988. Crafted from metal and wood, the piece interprets the structure of a tree through a slender vertical metal body. Šípek’s design language is characterized by a combination of organic forms, traditional materials, and unconventional structural solutions. In contrast to the geometric rigor of minimalism, his designs reclaim the sensuality of form, the value of craftsmanship, and a certain theatricality—traits that made him one of the most distinctive figures in late-20th-century European design.
Born in Prague in 1949, Bořek Šípek trained in interior design and later studied architecture in Hamburg and philosophy in Stuttgart. In 1983, he established his studio in Amsterdam, from where he embarked on an international career that led him to collaborate with firms such as Driade, Alessi, and Vitra. His interest in artisanal techniques also led him, together with other collaborators, to spearhead the revival of the Bohemian glassblowing tradition through the Ajeto factory. Between 1990 and 2003, he served as architect of Prague Castle by appointment of Václav Havel, while also developing numerous projects in architecture, interior design, and product design. His work has received numerous international awards and is characterized by a constant search for dialogue between contemporary design, craftsmanship, and Central European tradition.
