A unique piece with both sculptural and documentary qualities, linked to the artistic and cultural milieu of 1930s Denmark, a decisive period in the transformation of Danish decorative arts and design. The identification of the figure as Poul Henningsen is particularly plausible given the prominence he had already achieved by the 1930s. An architect, designer, writer, and highly influential intellectual, Henningsen was one of the leading figures in Denmark’s cultural modernization. His thinking and work helped establish a new relationship between architecture, design, craftsmanship, and everyday life. Gunnar Hammerich studied at the Danish Academy of Fine Arts and spent most of his career as a sculptor of portraits and busts. Between 1923 and 1927, he lived and worked in Brazil and Argentina, where he created various portraits. Over time, he assembled a significant collection of furniture, antiques, ceramics, glass, and books, and also became a prominent conservator of historical heritage.
