The design is based on a deliberately solid and architectural geometry, softened by the richness of the wood’s various tones and grain patterns. This piece retains the manufacturer’s label and the number 61901, which match those documented for this model.

The primary expressive element is concentrated along the perimeter: the legs and skirting are covered by a succession of small, raised geometric wooden elements—including circles, semicircles, rectangles, and abstract shapes—that create an almost sculptural rhythm. In contrast to this rich, tactile surface, the wide tabletop maintains a great deal of formal restraint. Its extendable design further expands the functional possibilities of a piece conceived to occupy a central position in the space.

The Lane Company was one of the great American furniture manufacturers of the 20th century. Founded in Altavista in 1912 as the Standard Red Cedar Chest Company, it initially achieved extraordinary popularity thanks to its famous cedar chests and, beginning in the postwar period, significantly expanded its production: it introduced side tables in 1951, storage furniture in 1956, and new lines of decorative furniture during the 1960s. This diversification made Lane one of the most recognizable names in mid-century American home furnishings, with a product line that evolved from Mid-Century Modern toward more sculptural and expressive designs.
