One of Alvar Aalto’s most recognizable designs for Artek, the Model 901 tea cart was conceived in 1936 and presented that same year at the Milan Triennale. Its design particularly clearly encapsulates the aesthetic developed by Aalto: a lightweight structure built from large, continuous curves of birch, domestic functionality, and a marked sculptural expressiveness.

The piece is constructed from two large stretcher frames of curved birch slats, which support the two trays and extend to form the handle. The large white circular wheels are one of its most distinctive visual elements, while the black surfaces create an elegant hallmark of contrast with the wood’s natural tone. Aalto conceived the design based on a wide range of influences: British tea culture, which he encountered during his travels with Aino Aalto, and his interest in Japanese architecture and craft traditions.

Alvar Aalto was one of the leading figures in 20th-century modern architecture and design and one of the key figures responsible for the international recognition of Finnish design. In contrast to the rigidity of much of European functionalism, he developed a more organic and humanistic modernity, based on the expressive use of natural materials and extraordinary research into the possibilities of bentwood. In 1935, he founded Artek together with Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl, with the aim of uniting art, technology, and modern production. His furniture, conceived in close relation to his architectural projects, soon achieved international recognition and today forms part of the canon of modern design.
