DESCRIPTION
Venus de Medici. Rome or Florence, last quarter of the 18th century.
Bronze.
Measurements: 33 x 12 x 11 cm.
Exquisite copy of the "Medici Venus" (first century BC), now preserved in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence (Italy). The original work would be the creation of a sculptor in the immediate tradition of Praxiteles and follows the type of the Aphrodite Puddite or Venus Pudititia just out of the bath. Thus, the young woman covers her pubis and bust as if she had been surprised at the moment of emerging from the sea, adopting a graceful gesture. Her features are also harmonious and delicate. Next to her plays a dolphin with two winged creatures, a reference to the birth of Venus from the foam of the sea after the castration of Uranus by Chronos.
