This Art Nouveau period vase is notable for its seductive bulbous form and masterfully executed artistic relief depicting graceful nymphs, fish and birds intertwined in an idyllic marine scene; the piece is enhanced with a distinguished finish by brass finials on the mouthpiece and base, which provide a subtle and lasting metallic contrast (possibly a later period enhancement).
Alfred Jean Foretay moved to Paris where, in 1877, he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. A student of Falguières, he earned an honorable mention in 1891 and a gold medal in 1904 while attending the Paris Salons. Foretay left a legacy of remarkable sculptures that are highly collectible.
