This pewter pitcher, from the Art Nouveau period (ca. 1900), is notable for its original shell shape. The piece is richly decorated in relief with floral motifs and has a sculptural handle in the form of a branch crowned by a putti (angel).
Its creator, Jean-Maurice Petizon (known as "Petiz"), was a sculptor who, after being the descendant of a saga of miners, founded his own foundry in Paris around 1890. Petiz created numerous pieces in the purest Art Nouveau style and distinguished himself by being his own foundryman, signing all his works with his alias.
