EUGENE ALFRED LELIEVRE (Montmartre 1856 - Meudon, 1945).
Jug, ca. 1900.
Silver-plated pewter.
Signed on the right side and numbered.
Siot-Decauville Paris foundry stamp on the back.
Weight: 2.450 g.
Measurements: 25 x 18 x 11 cm.
Jug decorated in relief that stands out for the representation of the head of the God Bacchus on the front of the mouthpiece. The handle reinforces the Dionysian theme as it is sculpted with vine shoots, vine leaves and bunches of grapes. The ornamentation is completed with plant motifs and, curiously, fish. The piece is signed and bears the seal of the foundry. It is a paradigmatic example that masterfully illustrates the aesthetic revolution that Art Nouveau brought to the decorative arts.
Eugène-Alfred Lelièvre was a French artist and goldsmith whose prolific work ranged from sculptures to tableware, jewelry and accessories. His creations are often associated with the Art Nouveau style. Lelièvre was a valued member of the legendary Paris Salon, and a regular exhibitor at prestigious institutions such as La Société des Artistes Décorateurs, La Société des Artistes Français and La Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
Siot-Decauville was an influential French artistic foundry, active in Paris from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Founded by Edmond-Gustave Siot (1841-1908) after his marriage to Elise Decauville in 1865, the house specialized in bronzes and was particularly renowned for its mastery of colored patinas. The foundry also operated under the firm Siot et Perzinka (1888-1891) during his partnership with Léon Perzinka, and maintained prestigious showrooms, first on the Boulevard des Italiens and then on the Boulevard des Capucines. After Edmond-Gustave's death, his widow and son Paul continued the management of this art house.
