This Art Nouveau vase is an example of the creative freedom of the period, where the human figure and natural elements merge to elevate a functional object to the category of art sculpture.
Frédéric Debon was a French sculptor noted for his Japonisme-style work, which was frequently editioned in bronze by the prestigious Susse Frères house. Debon regularly exhibited his pieces at the Salons of the Society of French Artists in Paris.
Susse Frères (Susse Fondeur), founded in 1758, is recognized as the oldest French art foundry still in operation. The company established itself as a foundry and art publishing house in the early 19th century. In 1840, they created their first bronze fabrication workshop (dedicated to assembly, chiseling and patina), securing their status as a full member of the Réunion des Fabricants de Bronze that same year.
