This vase is an exceptional example of the creative freedom of the period, where the human figure and natural elements merge to elevate a functional object to the category of art sculpture.
Emil Fuchs was a versatile Austrian-born sculptor, medal engraver and painter who achieved international success as the artist of choice of the British aristocracy and Royal Family. After training in Vienna and Berlin and obtaining the prestigious Prix de Rome, he settled in London, where he received direct commissions from Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, for whom he designed everything from coronation medals and coins to posthumous portraits. Under the influence of his friend John Singer Sargent, Fuchs masterfully evolved into portrait painting before moving permanently to New York during World War I; there he obtained American citizenship and left a permanent mark on the architecture of Manhattan with works such as the frieze of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, establishing himself as a creator of refined technique and great historical relevance on both continents.
