We are in front of what could have been a figurehead that would have adorned the front of a ship. The scallop shells that embellish the tunic of the person represented indicate that it could be a St. James the Apostle or a St. Roch. It had a double purpose: aesthetic and symbolic, since it was believed to provide protection to the vessel and its crew, as well as serving as an identifier of the ship.
