DESCRIPTION
JULIUS ROBERT HANNIG (Liegnitz, 1866 - Tabarz, 1931).
Vase, ca. 1900.
Silver-plated pewter.
Signed on the right side.
Weight: 5,400 g.
Measurements: 77 x 26 x 22 cm.
This Art Nouveau vase features a beautiful asymmetrical design characteristic of the movement. The handles are shaped like corn cobs, while the body is decorated in relief with natural motifs: ears of wheat, poppies and lily flowers.
Julius Robert Hannig was a German sculptor who defied his father's will to study fine arts at the Dresden Academy, where he later became a professor. His talent was recognized by King Albert, who awarded him scholarships to study in Paris and Berlin. Hannig worked as a sculptor of genre figures, busts, monuments and fountains, eventually creating works for the Russian and Prussian courts (although many of his large sculptures in St. Petersburg and Berlin were lost, probably melted down during World War I). In France, he is especially known for his work in pewter in the Art Nouveau style. He opened his studio in Berlin in 1899, establishing himself as a notable artist in both spheres.
