This bronze piece stands out for its polychrome patinas in shades of brown, ochre and red. The design presents a relief of great delicacy where the profile of a woman emerges mysteriously among thistle leaves, integrating with a handle sculpted in the form of a curved stem that culminates in a bud. Originally presented at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1898, this jug is not only a decorative object, but a piece of historical significance that captures the most poetic essence of Jozon's style.
Jeanne Jozon was a leading French sculptor and ceramist whose career, begun at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bourges and perfected at the Académie Julian in Paris, established her as a key figure in the decorative arts at the turn of the century. Particularly renowned for her elegant female representations of romantic aesthetics - evocative of Mucha's style - and for her mastery in capturing regional folklore, Jozon succeeded in elevating everyday objects such as lamps, jugs and vases to the category of authentic art sculptures. A member of the Société des Artistes Français and recipient of an honorable mention at the 1897 Salon, her legacy is notable for a unique sensibility influenced by the Art Nouveau movement, as well as for her prestigious collaboration with the celebrated ceramicist Edmond Lachenal, defying the gender barriers of her time to leave an indelible mark on France's artistic heritage.
