MANUEL ÁLVAREZ LOSADA (Sant Feliu de Codines, Barcelona, 1945).
Untitled, 1986.
Marble sculpture.
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 82 x 32 x 13 cm.
The sculptor Manuel Álvarez developed his formation in the Salesian Professional Schools of Sarrià, in Barcelona. Later he will specialize in the different techniques of marble working, working for long periods in the quarries of Carrara, in Italy, thanks to the scholarship granted by the Pagani Foundation of Milan in 1975. Alvarez develops a characteristically informalist work, marked by a very personal and decorative style, which resorts with originality to the most abstract forms. A virtuoso of drawing and stone carving, his language is influenced by Constantin Brancusi and Jean Arp, and his work denotes a technical mastery that is combined with a permanent classicist tendency in the understanding of forms and the firmness of the compositional system. Throughout his career, Manuel Álvarez has held numerous exhibitions, shown his work in competitions and received several awards. Particularly noteworthy are the Critics' Prize at the II Biennial of Arese (Milan) in 1978 and the Sculpture Prize at the I Biennial of Art Futbol Club Barcelona. His work has been seen in personal exhibitions held in several Spanish capitals, as well as in Germany, France, Italy, Brazil, the United States, Japan and other countries around the world. He also has several public monuments in different parts of Catalonia and in Sussex (United Kingdom).
