Warwick vase. Italy, XIX century
Plaster.
It presents a restoration in a handle, as well as slight marks according to its age.
Measurements: 70 x 186 x 79 cm.
Crater of classical inspiration known as Warwick Vase, made of plaster and conceived as an ornamental piece of large format. The body presents a rich decoration in relief with masks of Dionysian character -beards, wavy hair and intense expressions-, accompanied by vegetal motifs and an upper border of leaves and bunches. The handles, of great plastic development, adopt intertwined organic forms that reinforce the dynamism of the whole. The piece stands on a molded foot that provides balance and monumentality.
This model is inspired by the famous Roman vase found in the 18th century in the Villa Adriana (Tivoli) and subsequently spread throughout Europe through copies in marble, bronze and plaster. During the 19th century, at the height of neoclassical taste, these reproductions were integrated into gardens, galleries and decorative spaces as symbols of erudition and classical refinement.
