DESCRIPTION
Set of two Putti of altarpiece; Spain, XVI century.
Carved wood.
They present faults.
Measurements: 12.5 x 17 x 4 cm; 48.5 x 34 cm.
This set is formed by two reliefs of putti or angels, represented with a childish face and wings spread on the back, arranged on a golden base that reinforces its ornamental presence. These are typical elements of the sculptural decoration of altarpieces, where this type of figures fulfilled both an aesthetic and symbolic function, associated with the celestial sphere and the glorification of the sacred.
The wood carving, together with the application of gilding, responds to the usual practices of 16th century Spanish altarpiece sculpture, in which the visual richness of the whole was an essential resource to enhance the devotional impact of the altar. The stylization of the faces and the decorative character of the wings reflect the transition between late Gothic forms and the first Renaissance influences, still integrated within a strong ornamental tradition.
