This piece brings the graphic freedom and figurative imagination characteristic of Asger Jorn into the realm of ceramics. On the rounded body of the vessel, the artist incorporates a hybrid, schematic figure, defined by a continuous line that is a hallmark of the blue and white glaze.

For Jorn, ceramics were a true realm of experimentation. He began working intensively with this medium in 1953 in Sorring, Denmark, and shortly thereafter settled for extended periods in Albissola, an Italian town with a long ceramic tradition that had become a meeting place for the international avant-garde. There, he delved deeper into a conception of clay that departed from conventional decorative production, based on direct intervention, irregularity, and the integration of modeling, drawing, and color.

The incised figure on this piece also connects to the universe of anthropomorphic creatures and imaginary animals that has recurred in Jorn’s work since his time associated with Cobra. The economy of the line—almost automatic—preserves the spontaneity of the drawing, while the blue, unevenly distributed across the light background, accentuates the artisanal and deliberately free nature of the surface. Its small format thus encapsulates two fundamental aspects of his ceramics: the reclaiming of the everyday object as an artistic medium and the continuity between painting, drawing, and material.

Asger Jorn was one of the most internationally influential Scandinavian artists of the 20th century. Trained in Paris alongside Fernand Léger, he was one of the driving forces behind Cobra and later participated in the founding of the Situationist International. Ceramics played an important role in his artistic practice from the early 1950s onward, particularly following his experience in Albissola, where he remained intensely active for the rest of his career. His international reputation was established by the end of that decade, and the Museum Jorn in Silkeborg currently houses the core of his legacy and a significant collection of his ceramic works.
