Dated 1958, this piece represents a particularly significant period in Asger Jorn’s ceramic experimentation, which unfolded in parallel with his growing international recognition. Beginning in 1953, the artist worked intensively with clay, and following his arrival in Albissola in 1954, he made ceramics a primary medium for translating into three-dimensional form the gestural freedom and spontaneity that characterized his painting. It was precisely in 1958 that he achieved significant international recognition through his participation in the Brussels World’s Fair.

In this small-scale sculpture, the irregular and deliberately free modeling is combined with a surface of layered glazes in greens, whites, ochres, reds, and yellows, which blur the boundaries between material, color, and form. Jorn moves away from the traditional conception of ceramics as a functional object and approaches it as an essentially plastic medium: the material retains the traces of the process and takes on an organic appearance, reminiscent of the hybrid and metamorphic figures that recur in his imagination.

Ceramics played a substantial role in Jorn’s artistic exploration during these years. In Albissola, he found an artisanal environment that fostered collective experimentation and direct work with materials; there, beginning in the mid-1950s, he developed a body of work consisting of vessels, reliefs, and sculptures characterized by expressive and freely improvised modeling. This exploration would reach a monumental scale in 1959 with the large ceramic relief measuring approximately 27 × 3 meters, created for the Aarhus Statsgymnasium.

Asger Jorn was one of the key figures of the postwar European avant-garde. A co-founder of CoBrA in 1948 and later of the Situationist International, he championed experimental creation in opposition to the rationalist approaches of modern art and design. His work spanned painting, ceramics, sculpture, graphic art, and an extensive body of theoretical writing, all of which he viewed as closely interrelated fields. In 1964, he was the subject of major retrospectives in Basel, Amsterdam, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art; a significant portion of his legacy is currently preserved at the Museum Jorn in Silkeborg.
