This remarkable sculpture is an exceptional example of Italian Marian art from the Duecento, both for the power of its sculptural conception and for the expressiveness of the figures and the significant use of polychrome. The Virgin is depicted enthroned with the Child on her lap, following the medieval typology of the Sedes Sapientiae, in which Mary is symbolically conceived as the throne of Christ, the incarnation of divine Wisdom. This is a model rooted in a deep medieval tradition that became widely disseminated in European sculpture and maintained a significant presence in Italy during the 12th and 13th centuries.

The composition retains the pronounced frontal and representational quality characteristic of this iconography, though it introduces a particularly close relationship between Mother and Son. Mary enfolds the Child through the arrangement of her arms, while her large hand extending over her body helps to integrate both figures into a single volume. The Virgin’s head is especially well-executed, with an elongated face, large, intensely defined almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, and a small mouth. The Child reproduces much of this same stylized facial treatment, establishing a deliberate correspondence between the two figures.

The quality of the execution is also evident in the hands—with long, clearly defined fingers—and in the firm construction of the forms. The garments are rendered through broad masses and folds with a pronounced linear quality, still far from a fully naturalistic interpretation. The throne, defined by architectural elements arranged in tiers on either side of the Virgin, accentuates her regal status and helps lend the entire composition a remarkable sense of monumentality despite its modest dimensions.

The polychromy plays a fundamental role in interpreting the sculpture. Reds, ochres, and dark tones define the garments, the skin tones, and the various elements of the composition, and are preserved in sufficient quantity to still allow one to appreciate the chromatic effect that originally accompanied this type of image.

A particularly relevant typological reference is the Madonna on the Throne with Child housed in the Pinacoteca Civica e Diocesana in Spello, a polychrome wooden sculpture dated to between the last quarter of the 12th century and the early 13th century, in which the institution itself acknowledges the convergence of the “Nicopoia” and “Sedes Sapientiae” models. This comparison allows us to contextualize the persistence in Italy of these images—characterized by their pronounced frontal orientation and representational nature—during the transition to the Duecento, without implying that this particular carving belongs to the Umbrian school.
