The story is told that Marilyn Monroe met Eve Arnold at a party in the early 1950s and said, "If you could do that brilliant story of Marlene Dietrich, can you imagine what you could do with me?"

Eve Arnold was an American photographer, a member of the Magnum agency since 1951. She was born in Philadelphia to a family of Jewish immigrants from Russia, her parents being Rabbi William Cohen (born Velvel Sklarski), and his wife Bessie (Bosya Laschiner). His early interests were in literature and dance, but in 1940 he became interested in photography and made his first images. Between 1947 and 1948 he studied photography and film with Alexei Brodovitch at the New School for Social Research in New York. From 1951 she joined the Magnum agency as an associate member and in 1957 she became a full member and her photographic reports began to be published in magazines such as Life, Paris Match, Stern, Sunday Times or Vogue, becoming the first reporter of the agency. Two of her best known photographs are portraits of Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe during a break in her work and she took them in a direct way without prior notice. Although he has also made reports on Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, James Cagney and Paul Newman. In 1961 he moved to London permanently, although he made several trips to countries such as the Soviet Union, Afghanistan, South Africa, Egypt and China. In his reportages he used to emphasize social aspects. His first itinerant solo exhibition was held in 1980 and was entitled In China. He has also had exhibitions linked to the Magnum agency at the Tampa Museum in Florida in 1983 and at the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in 1989. His work is represented at the Ludwig Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 2015 the Magnum Foundation published an illustrated biography of Eve Arnold. Throughout her life she received numerous awards including Honorary Doctorates from the University of St. Andrews and Staffordshire, the title of Master of Photography awarded by the ICP and the Order of the British Empire.
