Portrait of Joan Miró by Francesc Català-Roca at the Prado Museum, where the artist stands before *Vision of Saint Peter Nolasco*, a work by Francisco de Zurbarán. The choice of composition establishes a thought-provoking dialogue between two moments in the history of Spanish art: the pictorial tradition of the Golden Age represented by Zurbarán and the radical modernity of Miró. The image is particularly representative of Català-Roca’s approach to portraiture: far from merely capturing the subject’s face, he places him in a space rich with meaning, making the surroundings an essential part of the photograph. Miró thus appears integrated into the very discourse of the artwork itself. The photograph is part of the extensive professional and personal relationship that Català-Roca maintained with Miró for decades.
Francesc Catalá is considered by most critics to be the most important Catalan photographer of the 20th century. The son of fellow photographer Pere Català Pic, he was introduced to the art by his father. Throughout his career, he contributed to various publications, such as “Destino” and “La Vanguardia,” and illustrated numerous books with artistic photographs. He held his first solo exhibition in 1953, and among his awards are the City of Barcelona Prize (twice), the National Prize for Visual Arts, and the Medal for Artistic Merit.
