In this icon, the Virgin and Child Jesus emerge from a chalice or cup of the Eucharist, and appear surrounded by saints and bishops. In this way, the iconography alludes to the mission that God the Father has entrusted to his Son. Death and Resurrection, Easter and the Eucharist are thus announced in a devotional image characteristic of the orthodox iconographic tradition.
The Mother of God of the Life-giving Fountain or Life-giving Fountain is an epithet of the invocation of the Holy Mother of God that originated with her revelation of a sacred spring in Valoukli, Constantinople, to a soldier named Leo Marcellus, who later became the Byzantine emperor Leo I.
