Orthodox icon representing the Protection of the Theotokos (Pokrov). This icon celebrates the miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary in the 10th century, protecting the faithful in Constantinople. The central figure is the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) with outstretched arms, symbolizing her intercession and protection. In a composition of symmetrical and orderly distribution, holy angels and faithful are distributed on each side. Along with this Marian invocation, it is often depicted with figures such as St. Andrew the Mad and his disciple Epiphanius, who witnessed the apparition of the Virgin.
This icon is particularly venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Churches, especially in the Russian Orthodox Church, where the feast of the Intercession of the Theotokos (Pokrov) is an important celebration.
