Antonio de Solís y Ribadeneyra was an outstanding Spanish playwright and historian, considered one of the last notable exponents of the Hispanic literary baroque. Born in Alcalá de Henares, he studied law at the University of Salamanca, where he began his theatrical career. He held important positions in the court, including secretary of state and chronicler of the Indies. When he received holy orders in 1667, he abandoned his theatrical activity.
Of his ten surviving comedies, El amor al uso, which inspired French adaptations, and La gitanilla de Madrid, based on the novel by Cervantes, which influenced authors such as Hugo and Longfellow, stand out.
His most influential work was Historia de la conquista de México, published in 1684, which recounts the process of conquest between the appointment of Hernán Cortés and the fall of Tenochtitlán. This chronicle established itself as a classic of Castilian prose and was widely disseminated and translated in Europe and America. For centuries, it was one of the main European references on the history of Latin America.
