The Aeneid is a Latin epic poem composed by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC, considered his masterpiece and one of the most important texts of Latin literature. It consists of 12 books and about 10,000 verses in dactylic hexameters.
The work narrates the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan hero who, after the fall of Troy, embarks on a long journey to Italy, where he becomes the mythical ancestor of the Roman people. The first six books describe his wandering journey, while the remaining six tell the story of the war that the Trojans wage against the Italic peoples, a conflict in which they finally triumph.
