Romancero gitano is one of the most important works of Federico García Lorca and one of the fundamental books of Spanish poetry of the twentieth century. First published in 1928, the collection of poems consolidated the fame of its author and made him one of the most prominent figures of the Generation of 1927. The fifth edition appeared in 1935, a year before the poet's death. The first edition of 1928, published by Revista de Occidente, is of special bibliographical interest as it is the original edition of one of the fundamental works of 20th century poetry in the Spanish language. Its appearance definitively consolidated Lorca as one of the most outstanding voices of his generation and contributed to the international projection of his work.
Romancero gitano is composed of eighteen romances in which Lorca recreates the universe of the Andalusian gypsy people. However, the work is not intended to be a realistic description of the life of this community, but a symbolic representation of values such as freedom, rebellion, passion and the struggle against oppression. Through gypsy characters, the author explores universal conflicts related to destiny, desire, death and social marginalization.
One of the highlights of the book is the combination of tradition and innovation. Lorca recovers the classic form of Spanish romance, characterized by octosyllabic verse and assonant rhyme, but transforms it through a language loaded with metaphors, symbols and poetic images of great expressive force. Elements such as the moon, the horse, the water or the night appear constantly and acquire deep meanings linked to life, death and human destiny.
The atmosphere of the poems is marked by mystery and drama. In many of them there is a permanent tension between the desire for freedom and the forces that limit the individual, represented by authority, social norms or inevitable destiny. This tragic vision constitutes one of the most characteristic features of Lorca's work.
Since its publication, Romancero gitano has been widely praised by critics for its originality and aesthetic beauty. The work managed to unite the Spanish popular tradition with modern literary currents, becoming a reference of poetry in the Spanish language. In addition, it allowed to project internationally the figure of Federico García Lorca as one of the great poets of the twentieth century.
Federico García Lorca (Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, 1898 - between Víznar and Alfacar, Granada, 1936) was a poet, playwright and visual artist. Considered one of the most influential voices of Spanish literature, he developed a work deeply linked to Andalusian popular culture and the renewal of traditional poetic forms. His life and literary production were marked by an intense artistic sensitivity and by the historical context of Spain at the beginning of the 20th century. His career was tragically interrupted when he was shot at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.
