The leather binding is worn, exposing the wooden core and the spine ribs; folio CCXCIII is missing; there is a moisture stain; marginal restorations; and paper is missing from the inner margin.

One of the fundamental works for understanding medieval liturgy and one of the most widely circulated liturgical treatises during the early centuries of printing.
The *Rationale divinorum officiorum*, written by Guillaume Durand, Bishop of Mende and one of the most prominent intellectual figures of the medieval Church, constitutes an extensive exposition and symbolic interpretation of the liturgy and of the objects, ceremonies, vestments, and spaces associated with Christian worship. The work, also known for its enormous influence as a manual of liturgical interpretation, was conceived to explain the spiritual significance of the practices and elements that made up the Church’s ceremonial rites.
Durand does not merely describe the rites; he seeks to uncover their symbolic and theological meaning. Altars, churches, priestly vestments, sacred vessels, gestures, colors, feasts, and ceremonies are interpreted within a complex symbolic vision of the Christian world. This characteristic made the *Rationale* a particularly influential work of extraordinary longevity.
Its importance is also evident in its extraordinary publishing success. The text began to be printed very early on and saw numerous editions during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, becoming one of the most widely held medieval religious titles in the earliest printed libraries. Incunabula editions date back to the earliest decades of printing, including the famous 1459 Mainz edition, produced by Johann Fust and Peter Schöffer, just a few years after the Gutenberg Bible. The work is a valuable document for the study of medieval culture, the history of liturgy, Christian iconography, and the transmission of theological thought. Its presence among the incunabula is particularly significant because it is a text that remained in use for generations and that allowed a liturgical tradition developed throughout the Middle Ages to be established and disseminated through the new technology of printing.
