This 18th century Italian chest of drawers is an exceptional piece that exemplifies the refined art of late Baroque furniture, executed with an outstanding technical mastery in wood and marquetry. Its sinuous and volumetric structure, with curved legs and "bombé" profile, is characteristic of Rococo forms, a style that, although originating in France, had wide resonance in different Italian regions, adapting itself with local accents.
The surface of this chest of drawers is completely covered with an exquisite geometric marquetry work in wood, forming a design of three-dimensional cubes that create an optical effect known as trompe-l'œil. This technique, the result of the meticulous inlaying of small pieces of different shades of wood, not only gives visual depth, but also highlights the virtuosity of the cabinetmaker and his interest in the decorative as well as the illusionistic, in tune with the Baroque taste for wonder and artifice.
The bronze fittings, stylized with asymmetrical and organic forms, also respond to the Rococo decorative repertoire, with French influences visible in the rocaille ornamentation. These elements not only serve a utilitarian function as handles and keyholes, but also act as a visual counterpoint to the geometric regularity of the design, adding dynamism and material contrast.
The undulating profile of the lower plinth and the soft curvature of the legs reinforce the sensation of lightness and movement, contributing to an overall aesthetic where the structural blends with the ornamental.
