This pair of consoles corresponds to the French furniture of the Louis XVI period, a time when the neoclassical taste is imposed definitively in the decorative arts, inspired by the recovery of the models of classical antiquity and the principles of order, symmetry and proportion.
The consoles have a rectilinear and balanced structure, with a slightly cut front and chamfered corners, supported by four fluted legs of circular section, tapered towards the floor and topped with toupie, directly derived from the classical column. The skirt is decorated with a delicate and well-proportioned carving based on floral garlands, knotted bows and geometric motifs, arranged symmetrically, with a central bow that acts as a compositional axis of the whole.
The richly carved wood is covered with water gilding, a common technique in 18th century representative furniture, which lent luminosity and prestige to noble rooms. The top cover, made of pink veined marble, adapts precisely to the contours of the piece of furniture and underlines its aristocratic character, as well as protecting the surface from use.
