DESCRIPTION
Spanish late-modernist cabinet, ca.1920.
Wood covered with gilded and silvered guadamecí.
Good general condition, consistent with its age.
Measurements: 137 x 72 x 28 cm.
Singular Spanish cabinet that integrates the historical tradition of the guadamecí with the sinuous language inherited from Modernism.
The upper body is completely covered in gold and silver guadamecí, a decorative technique of long tradition in Spain consisting of leather worked in relief, polychrome and metallic. The front displays a rich vegetal composition of undulating lines, open flowers and stylized fruits, clearly linked to the modernist ornamental repertoire, although with a certain compositional restraint typical of the years of transition towards Art Deco.
The cut profile of the lower skirt, with its curvilinear outline, reinforces the organic dynamism characteristic of late modernism. The structure rests on turned legs joined by carved chambrana, providing stability and formal contrast to the brightness of the guadamecí.
The incorporation of this traditional technique into a functional piece of furniture makes the piece a particularly interesting example of late Spanish modernism, where the recovery of historical decorative arts coexisted with contemporary furniture design.
