DESCRIPTION
Renaissance style chest; Italy, XIX century.
Walnut wood.
Measurements: 122 x 54 x 55 cm.
Exempt chest made of solid walnut wood, profusely carved on all its visible faces. The front and the sides present a decorative program of classical inspiration, with reliefs of Roman chariots, profiles with helmet, masks and putti, executed with remarkable technical virtuosity. At the lateral ends, round sculptural figures arranged on corbels reinforce the architectural and monumental character of the piece. The central panel stands out for an imposing wrought iron lock, which preserves vestiges of an interior red velvet lining, an element that accentuates its representative dimension. The whole rises on a molded plinth and presents a warm patina, well preserved, which evidences its original state without restorations.
The piece is part of the historicist tradition of the 19th century, evoking Italian Renaissance models through an eclectic reinterpretation of the classical repertoire. The so-called neo-styles of the 19th century, including neo-Renaissance, emerged in the context of a historicist recovery of the forms of the past, driven by the rise of collecting and the consolidation of the decorative arts as an autonomous field. In Italy, this trend manifested itself in the reinterpretation of Renaissance models. Pieces such as this ark do not seek a literal reproduction, but an idealized recreation that combines stylistic fidelity with contemporary techniques and sensibilities.
