DESCRIPTION

Historicist ark; Possibly institutional work for the plenary hall of the City Council of Zamora, late nineteenth century.
Wood and silver-plated iron.
It has a lock with bells and keeps a key.
Measurements: 95 x 112 x 67 cm.
This imposing historicist chest, probably linked to an institutional commission for the plenary hall of the Town Hall of Zamora, is a remarkable example of the recovery of the artistic languages of the past characteristic of nineteenth-century European visual culture. Conceived not only as a functional piece of furniture, but also as an object of civic and symbolic representation, the piece fully responds to the historicist taste that dominated the decorative arts of the time, especially in official contexts.
The structure of the chest refers to Renaissance and Hispanic plateresque models, reinterpreted from an eclectic sensibility typical of the 19th century. Its decoration, extraordinarily rich and meticulous, is organized by means of a complex repertoire of geometric carvings, vegetal motifs and heraldic elements that cover practically the entire surface. On the front, a large crowned coat of arms stands out, a central element of the composition and a clear allusion to the municipal power and the historical identity of the city. The symmetrical arrangement of the panels, articulated by means of profusely ornamented vanes and moldings, recalls the compositional solutions of Aragonese Renaissance carpentry, reinterpreted here with a markedly monumental and ceremonial sense.
Of special interest is the interior lid, where hybrid figures of mannerist and fantastic resonance appear, integrated between vegetal scrolls and creatures facing each other. This ornamental program is evidence of the knowledge of historicist decorative repertoires inspired by Renaissance engravings and the arts of the Spanish and Italian Quincentury. The deep and precise carving, together with the dark finish of the wood, generates intense chiaroscuro effects that reinforce the sculptural character of the whole and demonstrate the high technical quality of the execution.
The piece should be contextualized within the framework of the regionalist and medievalist resurgence developed in Spain during the Bourbon Restoration. In cities with a strong historical past such as Zamora, public institutions frequently promoted the creation of furniture inspired by local artistic traditions, especially for representative spaces such as town halls, councils or casinos. Likewise, the ark reflects the rise of the decorative arts as a prestigious discipline in the second half of the 19th century, driven by schools of arts and crafts and by specialized workshops that recovered traditional carving and cabinetmaking techniques.
