BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Reliquary; Spanish school; XVIII century.
Gilded wood and textile.
Preserves original frame.
Measurements: 25 x 19 cm; 33,5 x 23,5 cm (frame).
Reliquary in wood that contains nine ornaments with different main relics, but at the same time the intermediate spaces also serve to house divine remains. This type of reliquary was very popular and common since the Gothic period. It should be remembered, however, that at that time practically any element that had been in contact with the saint or his mortal remains (cloths, burial soil, etc.) was considered a sacred relic. The best examples were made of precious metals, but specimens such as the present one were also highly valued, both for the container and, above all, for the content.
