This elegant Art Nouveau coffee and tea set (ca. 1890) comes from the prestigious English factory James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield. It is made of Britannia Metal (a pewter alloy composed mainly of tin, antimony and copper, prized for its silvery appearance). The service consists of teapot with warming base, coffee pot, milk pot and sugar bowl.
James Dixon & Sons, founded in 1806, was one of the leading British manufacturers during the Industrial Revolution, specializing in pewter, Britannia Metal and galvanized silverware. The company is famous for its dining items, such as tea services, and its sports trophies (including the American Masters golf trophy). The company, whose trademark was a Trumpet with a Flag (since 1879), was family owned until 1976.
