DESCRIPTION
Regency style frame; France, c. 1730.
Carved wood, gilded and stucco.
Measurements: 45 x 40 cm; 26 x 22 cm.
This French Regency style frame (c. 1730) is part of the transition period between the late Baroque of Louis XIV and the full Rococo of Louis XV. The wood carving, richly worked with scrolls, fleshy leaves and asymmetrical vegetal motifs, already announces the taste for ornamental lightness and decorative dynamism characteristic of the new style. The gilding on stucco reinforces the effect of luxury and luminosity, while the still relatively contained structure of the profile maintains a classical balance inherited from the previous century. Overall, the piece reflects the courtly refinement of the Regency, where decorative exuberance begins to impose itself without completely breaking with baroque solemnity.
