DESCRIPTION
Pair of candlesticks. France ca.1850.
Patinated bronze and gilded bronze.
Measurements: 25 x 12 x 12 cm (each).
Singular pair of French candlesticks of the mid-nineteenth century, executed in patinated and gilded bronze, which combine a strong architectural character with an iconography of medieval inspiration.
The structure is organized around a central axis flanked by fluted columns, enriched with coiled snakes in gilded bronze that provide dynamism and chromatic contrast. At the top, small finials with double axes and heraldic elements reinforce its historicist character, while the triangular base rests on gilded circular supports.
Particularly notable is the presence of figures of fantastic birds -with gothic resonances- that support the whole in the lower zone, integrating themselves in a composition of great vertical balance. The contrast between the dark patina and the golden details accentuates the ornamental richness and technical refinement typical of French bronzes of the period.
These pieces reflect the eclectic taste of the Second Empire and historicist romanticism, where the reinterpretation of medieval and Renaissance models is translated into decorative objects with a strong sculptural personality.
