Measurements: 53 x 6 cm (closed); 91 x 6 cm (open).
Telescopic spyglass of English origin, made of gilded metal and partially covered in leather, belonging to the tradition of optical instruments for civilian and maritime use developed in Great Britain during the 19th century. Its construction follows the extendable “draw tube” model, a system characteristic of numerous spyglasses manufactured during the late Georgian period and, especially, the Victorian era.
Spotting scopes of this type were common instruments among travelers, sailors, military personnel, hunters, and amateur observers, as well as being part of certain domestic settings and social contexts. British maritime and commercial expansion during the 19th century fostered the production and widespread use of increasingly precise optical instruments, intended for both navigation and terrestrial observation.
