DESCRIPTION
After ADAM FRANÇOIS VAN DER MEULEN (Brussels, 1632 - Paris, 1690), 19th century.
"Horsemen in landscapes".
Pair of engravings.
In wooden frames of Elizabethan period.
Measurements: 58 x 44 cm; 85 x 72 cm (frame).
Pair of 19th century Flemish engravings reproducing original compositions by Adam François Van der Meulen, famous painter and visual chronicler of the campaigns and dominions of Louis XIV. The prints show riders in the foreground, depicted with dynamism and care for the horse's anatomy, advancing over an open landscape that combines natural elements with signs of human occupation.
The horizon reveals incipient architectures, perhaps the first traces of a city in formation. This mixture of military movement and territory in transformation is typical of Van der Meulen's strategic gaze, capable of uniting topography with historical narrative.
These prints come from the Collection of 34 engravings that brings together views of Versailles, Fontainebleau, Paris, Besançon, Douai, Arras, Saint-Omer, Valenciennes and other significant sites of the kingdom. The collection, considered the most beautiful French illustrated book of the 17th century, was the subject of sumptuous editions, including the gift copy offered by Louis XIV, bound in red marroquin with the royal arms.
