Maurice Utrillo was a French painter, son of the artist Suzanne Valadon, known mainly for his urban landscapes of Paris, especially the neighborhood of Montmartre; he began to paint as part of a therapy to treat his alcoholism and mental health problems, and developed a very personal style, close to post-impressionism, characterized by streets, squares, facades and churches represented with a melancholic atmosphere and muted colors, highlighting his famous "white period" (c. 1909-1914), in which he used light tones and thick paint to highlight the walls of the city, achieving great recognition during his lifetime and leaving a body of work that is now present in important museums and international collections.
