From the 1960s on, Joan Miró intensified his exploration of volume as a territory of absolute freedom, where the found object, the primitive form and the poetic imagination converge. Sculptor Iran, made in 1974, belongs to this period of full creative maturity, in which the artist conceives sculpture as an experimental and almost playful act, far from any academicism.
The work is articulated from simplified forms and spatial tensions that refer to Miró's symbolic universe: Escultor Iran is inscribed in the surrealist language that Miró developed throughout his career, but with a clear desire for formal radicalism typical of his later years.
The works belong to the "Sculptor" series, a collection of original lithographs from 1974-1975 that represent the artist's relationship with sculpture, showing playful and poetic forms inspired by everyday objects, often with titles of countries (England, Italy, etc.). This series is an example of the link between painting and sculpture in his work.
