BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Follower of JACOPO BASSANO (Bassano del Grappa, Italy, ca. 1510 - 1592).
"The flood".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
It possesses frame of the XIX century.
Measurements: 170 x 120 cm.
This work is framed within the orbit of Jacopo Bassano in fact in the Prado Museum there is a work entitled "Noah after the Flood" attributed to the Bassano's workshop, in which you can see a similar aesthetic treatment of the same theme. It is the approach of this canvas, where the anecdotal, the realistic and detailed description that gives verisimilitude to what is represented, moving away from classical conventions to present to the faithful an image as understandable as possible. Thus, in the foreground we see characters and animals saving themselves from the waters, perched on the buildings, while around them float all kinds of objects worked with the precision of a still life painter. Further on we see a sick man who has been lifted onto a roof, and beside him a man raising his arms, begging God for mercy. Towards the background, along the shore, we see more characters in the same attitude. There are also some drowned people, both in the foreground and in the background. In addition, there are some figures directly taken from 16th century Italian works, such as the woman with her back to us in the lower right corner, possibly taken from one of the many engravings that circulated in Spain at the time. Although Noah's ark occupies an important place in the composition, the focus is precisely on this meticulous and careful description.
